Lorien Health Systems

January 6th, 2017 by Attorney Roger Weinberg

Lorien Health Systems is a locally run chain of ten nursing home and assisted living facilities located in four Maryland counties (Howard, Baltimore, Carroll and Harford). If you or a loved one suffered neglect or abuse at a Lorien facility we may be able to help.

The company was started in 1977 according to its website and offers the following services:

  • Skilled nursing
  • Rehabilitation
  • Assisted living
  • In-home care
  • Dialysis
  • Ventilator care
  • Tracheotomy care
  • Respite care
  • Hospices
  • Korean Senior Care.

Nine of the ten facilities are listed as providing skilled nursing care and rehabilitation:

  • Lorien Columbia
  • Lorien Elkridge
  • Encore at Turf Valley
  • Lorien Mays Chapel
  • Lorien Mt. Airy
  • Lorien Taneytown
  • Lorien Bel Air
  • Lorien Bulle Rock
  • Lorien Riverside.

The following are also described as assisted living facilities:

  • Encore at Turf Valley
  • Lorien Harmony Hall
  • Lorien Mt. Airy
  • Lorien Taneytown
  • Lorien Bel Air.

Medicare’s website lists ratings for eight of Lorien’s facilities.

  • The overall ratings and health inspections range from below average to much above average.
  • Quality measures go from much below average to average.

Lorien is a for-profit company. A study of professional journal articles released in 2009 made these findings about non-profit facilities:

  • They delivered higher quality care than for-profit facilities for two of the four most frequently reported quality measures: more or higher quality staffing and lower incidence of pressure ulcers (bedsores).
  • Non-profits had less use of physical restraints and fewer problems in government inspections.

Nursing homes and assisted living facility residents may be subjected to physical abuse by employees or other residents and neglect by facility staff. Neglect of a resident may involve one or more of the following:

  • Lack of proper care leading to bedsores or pressure ulcers, which may become infected and potentially life threatening
  • Repeated falls, causing severe, crippling injuries or death
  • Choking due to improper feeding
  • Medication errors, which can include giving the wrong medications and doses that are too small to be effective or so large that they cause serious side effects
  • The failure to recognize a resident needs medical care beyond what the facility can provide and the failure to have a resident transported to a hospital in a timely manner, causing a progression of the condition or illness, complications or death.

Nursing home negligence lawsuits filed due to neglect or abuse often include the following claims:

  • Failing to provide a resident with appropriate medical or nursing treatment
  • Failing to maintain adequate health and safety policies
  • Not keeping a facility free of hazards that could result in injuries to residents, such as those caused by falls
  • Negligent hiring of employees due to not performing background or criminal history checks
  • Negligent supervision of residents, resulting in falls and injuries, residents’ wandering away from a facility or assaults by residents against other residents
  • Negligent supervision of employees resulting in neglect and financial, physical and sexual abuse of residents
  • Understaffing, which can cause insufficient supervision of residents, insufficient medical care, improper physical or chemical restraints and increased stress on staff that may lead them to lash out against residents verbally or physically.
